COA novel

I finished reading the book Teen Angst? NAAA by Ned Vizinni and I think it had many great examples of how to grow up and what it is like to grow up and start coming of age. In the novel it showed how Ned experimented with different things and how not all of them his parents aproved of. Also in the little bit of  the book involved his middle school life it still provided a great example of how he started straying away from his parents and the difference between him in middle school and him in high school.

Even though there was only a little part of his experience of middle school it showed a good contrast of him in comparison to his middle school relationship with his parents and basically what he did in his life to what he did in high school and his relationship with his parents in high school. In middle school the chapter is really about him playing a video game when he drops the video game and he thinks it's broken he turns to his dad first to fix the problem which I thought really showed how kids are when they are younger.

In Ned's high school life he really started to stray away from his parents and he really had most of his adventures and stories out of the house and I started hearing less and less about his brother and barely anything about his sister and more about his friends and things he did out of the house. I think that shows that kids start to stray away and relly on their parents less and are more independent.

Coming of Age

In the book Teen Angst? NAAAH Ned goes through coming of age because he starts being more independent and starts going out more and not being with his family. Ned starts to hang out with friends from school. Also because he doesn't want to be seen in a certain way he doesn't want to be escorted by his dad when he wants to go out somewhere. He is also starting to value the opinion of his peers and people at school more. I think it is good to have a parent like Ned's dad because his dad seems to understand that he wants to branch out and he gives him his space. He also didn't get mad and blow up when Ned came home drunk.

"Now dad isn't an emmbarrassing guy, but the Shrivel show was an important gathering, and I didn't want him escorting me to and from it." (pg. 54). Ned might not want to hut his parents feelings but he wants to seem cool to his friends. I think that all teenagers do that and it might seem insulting to their parents but I don't think that they mean to hurt their feeling because they still love them but they also don't want to seem like they are weak and can't look after themselves.

I like Ned's dad because he is nice and I think that he is one of those parents who still remembers what it is like to be a teenager and he treats his son like he respects him and he is willing to accept him growing up. Some parents never want their kids to grow up so they hold on to them and suffocate them and that makes the kids want to leave more. Ned's dad let's him grow up and lets him do it at his own pace.

I think that kids coming of age is more than just the child being ready to grow up but it is also about the parents being willing to let their kids grow up and mature on their own. Kids should grow up at their own pace but with the guidance of their parents but not with them suffocating them and not givig them the space to grow up. Ned's dad let him have space but I think that he did it because he trusted Ned and he also gave him the respect he deserved.

Essay on Article

I read the article "Terrible twisters" I think that this article shows that it is important to listen to the instructions and not take warnings seriously. In the article it showed that many people that didn't listen died and that they should take warnings seriously even if they get tornadoes often. many people think that because they live in an area with a lot of tornadoes they don't have to take warnings seriously but the people who did listen and didn't take the situation lightly are still alive today.

I remember hearing on the radio that a man who was near a tornado didn't do anything to protect himself because he thought that the tornado wasn't a big threat and thankfully he is still alive today. He had a hard time getting in contact with anyone and he had a hard time finding his way to safety but he lived and that is an example of one of the good situations where someone actually survived. It also makes me think about people here in New York because since we don't get a lot of tornadoes we take a warning very seriously even though they probably will not hit us that hard  where as people in places where they get a lot of them take them less seriously.

In the article it showed me that listening is important. In the article it said "The storm killed six people." This shows the importance of listening because maybe if they were more careful they would still be alive. Even though only one of the three tornadoes was deadly they should still be more careful with their lives because it is a big gamble and if you lose you will die.

I think that this article will help people down in the places they have lots of tornadoes because it will help put things in perspective for them. It will show them that they are dangerous and it is not good to gamble they might think that it isn't a big deal but when they see all the devastation it causes they might think twice about not listening and be more cautious.

Plagiarizing

Q#1: The student could have said i found an interesting piece of writing about the discription of the painting by Van Gough then he could have stated the information about who wrote it and what website it was from and then put quotes around the entire piece of writing instead of plagiarizing.

Q#2: "There is a peaceful essence flowing from the structures." (no author "http://www.vangoghgallery.com/painting/starryindex.html")

Q#3: One way to avoid plagiarizing is to learn how to cite sources if you get your information from a website. Another way is to never copy something you read word for word always paraphrase. Finally you can avoid plagiarizing by writing based on your own thoughts.

Favorite blogs

I liked Joyce and Anthony's blogs because I liked their writing styles. I liked how in Joyce's blog had a nice comparison about Gale and Peeta and I liked how she was very descriptive about describing each character and then comparing and contrasting them. She wrote very clearly and she used good language to write. In Anthony's blog i liked how he clearly retold what happened in the book and I like how he made that his entire blog post with little thoughts he had mixed in. I think that he wrote very descriptively.

Reading these 2 blogs will help me with my own blogs because it will help me be more descriptive and I can use Joyce's technique of comparing and contrasting to compare 2 characters in a book. Also like in Anthony's blog I could do a recap of the part of the book I want to write about with my thoughts mixed in with it.

My thoughts on Juliet

I think that Juliet is an interesting character because of her relatioship with her parents. She feels obligated to please them but she also has her own wants. She feels like she has to please her parents and keep them happy. She is a people pleaser but to a much lesser degree, because she only does that with her parents. I think that her meeting Romeo will be good for her because it will help her stop feeling like she has to do what her parents say and she can't speak up for what she wants. She is obediant to her parents but she wants to do the complete opposite.

In the beginning of the play Juliet's dad and Paris have a conversation about Paris marrying Juliet and then her family has a conversation about it. While there is a conversation between the nurse Juliet and Juliet's mother Juliet is willing to marry Paris just because her mother and father might want her to. She doesn't tell them her feelings at all, she just listens and agrees with what her mother says.

Romeo is different than Juliet because he is willing to express his feelings and emotions about the things in his life. I think that he will teach Juliet to eventually speak up for herself and let known what she really wants.

Benvolio vs. Merchutio

In the play Romeo and Juliet the two people who are close to Romeo try and support him after he is rejected by Rosaline. But even though they both try and comfort Romeo they do it in two very different ways even though in effect they are both saying the same things. Benvolio is more tender and understanding he tries to reason with Romeo to get him to see the situation his point of view. Mercutio on the other hand is more mean and pushy about having Romeo see it his way. He is meaner to get Romeo to forget Rosaline.

In act 1 scene 1 lines 233, 235-236 Benvolio tries to get his point across to Romeo and tell him that he should examine other women and completely forget about Rosaline and even though Romeo protests Benvolio still remains calm and reasonable with Romeo. He doesn't get harsh with Romeo even though he insists in wallowing in his sorrow and not listening to Benvolio.

In act 1 scene 4 lines 27-32 Mercutio tells Romeo be rough with love and defeat it. He is more forceful and even though he also tells Romeo to examine other women he is harsh. I think that by telling romeo to be rough with love he isn't being sensitive to the way Romeo feels about love. Romeo thinks that love is important and he puts a lot of emphasis on it and it seems to be his life. He is more forceful with his want of making Romeo forget about Rosaline.

In conclusion I think that Benvolio and Mercutio are the same because they want to get the same message across to Romeo but they are also different because they express their feelings for that in different ways. Benvolio the reasoning compassionate one and Mercutio the aggressive harsh one. In the end I think Benvolio would have a better chance of getting Romeo to change if he didn't do it on his own because he would want to listen to Benvolio more than Mercutio and I don't blame him because I would too.

Romeo and Juliet

Dear Joe,

I just started reading Romeo and Juliet and it has been really interesting. Romeo ran into the woods when his cousin Benolvio started trying to spy on him. Also in the beginning a fight starts between the montague's and the Capulet's and the prince has to break it up. Many of the people in the story use puns to make sexual references when it can also mean something else.

Romeo is so sick because his love Rosaline doesn't love him back and he feels so sad that he went to hide in the woods and his cousin tries to tell him to get up and look at other women. Romeo feels like he only loves Rosaline and he will never forget her no matter how hard he tries. Benolvio tries to keep the peace and even in the beginning when the two sides were fightinng he tried to make peace and calm everyone down.
From your cousin,
Erik

Response to Another Sonnet for Stephan

I think that this sonnet is about a boy who grows up to be a man and that this sonnet was written by someone who was a close family member or friend that had a good relationship with him and was involved in his life. I think this because in the poem the person who wrote the sonnet knows a lot about his life and he seems to have kept up with him for his entire life. I think that this sonnet is like a tribute to Stephan to show all the good things he did in his life before he died because the line in the poem "Th boy, the youth, and the man are each now gone. Except that in my heart they linger on." Shows that Stephen died and the periods of his life still live on in his heart or memory that he will never forget.

In the first 4 lines of the sonnet it shows that Stephan is a young boy who makes the writter happy and it seems that they played together at a young age. He really seemed to like Stephan and it made it seem like they had a connection. I think that it shows that they connected at a young age and based on thge rest of the poem that they kept in touch and communicated throughout his life. Also with the next 4 lines it shows that he grew up to be a good person who was very smart and had a bright future. Also in the 9 to 12 lines it shows that he grew up to be very successful but it also makes it seem like he had a disease that he was fighting and that was what caused him to die.

Sonnet #1

Swinging from tree to tree, flying so free.

Beautiful colors of fur all so bright.

Crying out with calls loud and full of glee.

Their limbs grappling from day to night.

It’s not right for you to have to cower.

It is you who they so demoralize.

You are beautiful and full of power.

It is them though who you truly despise.

It is you who they badly violate.

They tell you things but they are all bad lies.

The only thing you can do is to hate.

All we see is the sadness in your eyes.

It is you they still so callously slay.
They kill you for parts so petty, for pay

My poetry

Poetry is
Poetry is the bridge between creativity and your thoughts.
It allows you to mix your felings and interests with your fantisies and wishes.

What happens when summer turns into fall
When the wind breaks out and the leaves start to change we blow the dust off of our coats and put them on, but we continue with our daily lives.
But what about the other animals?
Do the animals hate the wind freezing the wind on their face?
Do they appreciate the beauty of the changing leaves? Or do they go on with their daily lives like us, walking past the beauty of fall?

Michelangelo and David
You both started out young your experience and age not a factor.
You both aspired to greatness early, you did your job well you were a master an expert at what you did you were praised by the highest and most respected. That is why you are together, it is because you are so alike so powerful yet so young.

Michelangelo

"By 13 he had decided that he wanted to be an artist." Famous artists: Michelangelo pg.6

At an early age Michelangelo decided that he wanted to be an artist and even though his father opposed him and beat him for wanting to do that at first he learned to accept it. I think that had a lot to do with why he chose to make a sculpture of David. Michelangelo started to work on art at a very young age and he was really good at it too. He was also an architect and a poet. He was also noticed by Lorenzo the magnificent who invited him to be educated in sculpting along with his son and his nephew. He was also given a purple cloak to wear which means that since purple is a color that represents royalty he was really good at his artwork and was appreciated by Lorenzo. Michelangelo was known for his attention to detail and his facial expressions in his sculptures. He made each and every detail like the fold of skin in someone's arm to the expressions of someone's face to show their emotions in a sculpture.

The work of art that I chose was David which was a sculpture started by Michelangelo in 1501 and finished in 1504. On page 11 of Famous artists: Michelangelo it says that the facial expressions that were put onto his face and the way he stood made him look relaxed yet ready for action. It took a lot of different carving tools to make the detail in his sculpture look so real and lifelike. Unlike the 1473 David by Verrocchio Michelangelo's sculpture is of a young man and not of the boy David.

My interpretation of David by Michelango is that the reason that he chose to make this piece of art was because he could relate to David. In the story David as a young person kills a giant called Goliath who is favored to destroy David in a fight, but instead David kills Goliath with his slingshot. I think that Michelangelo felt like he was David starting out so young and already doing great things and being put in such a high place that he didn't have anyone who was like him so he gravitated to David because he felt like they were really the same. I think that it shows that even if you are young you can do great things and there is no age limit to when you can be great.

Analyzing Quentin and Margo in Paper Towns

In the book Paper Towns by John Green I think that Quentin is an interesting character in the book. I think that Quentin has a want deep inside of him for adventure but is never able to express it because his parents are really smart and he was brought up in a really  smart oriented family. I think that he is so in love with Margo because he knows how adventurous she is and he wants to experience the side of life that she lives in. I think that he wants to break away from the tight ropes and rigidness of his parents and be able to be free and be able to have an adventure. Even when Margo and Quentin were kids and they found a dead body Margo wanted to find out more and discover all about the dead man and even went on her own little investigation to find out why he died, whereas Quentin was afraid and wanted to run away from the body and tried to get it out of his mind.

I think that Quentin is that way because he was brought up that way but the more he grows up the more he wants to experiment with other things because he sees how bad he looks staying in his own little confined bubble. I think that when he was younger he felt that it was okay to be that way and his parents also contributed to that by always trying to make him smart and them being smart people influenced him to shy away from adventures. Even though it is okay to not be a huge adventurous person you shouldn't shy away from every adventure set before you. You have to step up and take a chance because it isn't a fun life to live if you are someone who just stays with the normal all the time.

Also on the other hand Margo who is willing to go on any adventure that comes her way that can be a problem too. In the book you find out that Margo has a habit of running away from her house and living on her own until she is found or comes back. That is dangerous and even though it is not okay to live a boring life Margo lives a dangerous life which is not a smart thing to do either. Sometimes you have to draw the line and say that this is not something smart to do and be smart to not do it. Margo though doesn't have that and she tends to run around doing crazy things that have no purpose. I think that her parents have some connection to that too. By the little i've seen of them they don't seem to care about her that much and they seem to want to fit into society so much that they don't want to have any fun and Margo being the complete opposite her parents put her down and make her feel out of place in the family. That is what makes her run away and do crazy things for attention from others she can't get attention at home so she decides that she wants it from other people.

Margo and Quentin are opposites and they both do things for different reasons so I think that they came together not just because the are neighbors but because they both want the same thing. But even though they want the same thing Margo does it for attention and compensation for her parents not respecting her. Quentin on the other hand does things because he is tired of living in his little bubble he wants to experience he world like Margo and I don't think that that is such a good thing because she tends to have some self destructive behavior. I think that both of them need to find a balance between their two extremes.

Character relationships in Looking for Alaska

I think that there are some interesting character relationships in Looking for Alaska. I think that the Colonel and Pudge have an interesting relationship because they are kind of like brothers. Also because of them helping Alaska drive off drunk and that lead to her death they feel connected and they are closer because of it. Even though they argue a lot because of their difference in opinion I think that they are still close because they have to be close to each other for support after the hard things that they have been through.

I think that Takumi is starting to play a bigger role because at first they stayed away from him because they were ashamed that they helped Alaska drive drunk and kill herself. I think that they need support and Takumi is their friend and he can help them get through the tough time that they are having. I think that this is going the hardest on Pudge because even though he knew her the least amount of time he loved her and he always had a fantasy of them being together even though he knew it would never happen. When Alaska was a live he had more control over himself in not wanting her and thinking that she would leave her boyfriend for him but after they made out he couldn't hold in his feelings and when he helped her kill herself before getting to express his feelings to her he was upset and horrified that he helped her.

I think that Pudge is going to eventually get over her because she will be a former memory but I don't think that his conscious will ever be clean because he will feel responsible for her death because no matter how many rituals he does in remembrance of her he will never get rid of that feeling that he is partially responsible for her death.

Looking for Alaska

In the book Looking for Alaska by John Green I think it shows that people can bring others together but they can also break them apart. I think that this is showed by how in the beginning Alaska held them together like a glue she was the life and stimulator of the group and she always made things exciting, and after she died Pudge and the Colonel were always fighting and they could never stop disagreeing. The problems she caused them to have a big fight and for Pudge to leave the Colonel and go on his way. Also with Alaska they went on adventures and were much happier now that she is dead they barely even get together anymore and they never talk.

It is not only that she died that is causing a stir it is the fact that they see her dying in a different perspective. Pudge is upset because he loved her and the day she died she made out with him and he hates her for leaving him and he wants to believe that she loved him and that she would leave her boyfriend for him. Everyone knew that she was random and impulsive and that her making out with Pudge meant absolutely nothing to her and he refuses to believe that even though he knows it. I think that if it meant something to her she wouldn't have risked riving drunk. The Colonel knows that that is what Pudge thinks but he knows that it meant nothing and he is more focused on finding out if it was a suicide or an accident.

I think that the tension between Pudge and the Colonel is not going to subside but I think that Pudge needs to let go of the notion he has that Alaska secretly loved him. I think that if he lets that go them him and the Colonel might be able to reconnect. I think that Pudge hates Alaska because he knows that she really didn't care about the kissing and he hates her for being strong enough to be able to leave him and get herself killed. I think he is afraid to find out the truth about if it was a suicide because it would devastate him.

I think that it is important that Pudge lets go of his fantasy in order for the relationship to get back to the way it was. The Colonel also needs to be more supportive of Pudge and not just mainly focus on solving a mystery. I think that this problem can be solved and it will get better but without Alaska it will never be the same.
